Day Two Long Island

We still love to look at harbors, this being one of the many on Long Island.  Because of the extreme tidal changes here the boats are on moorings rather than at fixed docks.
Today it was misting rain, but it kind of added something to the harbors.

This new boat was at the dock. If you look closely you can see the owner getting off of it.

We traveled the shoreline hunting for harbors. There are many to see on Long Island, especially on the north shore.

They used to build boats in Sag Harbor and this monument commemorates their efforts.

We love the show that they now have on Netflex called Royal Pains. It is a about a doctor that works in the Hamptons. They use a hospital and we think this may be it.

We had lunch at Nichol's. The ceiling and walls are covered with wood crates from wine cases.

Montauk lighthouse is a must see if you come to Long Island.

Another harbor, we stopped at a fish market and purchased Stripper, a local fish. What a great fish to grill with corn from a local stand, yum. It is interesting to see the difference in the north and south Long Island. The north has wineries and vegetable farms.  The south has the huge houses and rich people.

Ferry to Long Island

We traveled out of Mass. to Rhode Island and then to Connecticut. The trees were very colorful.  We covered four states today in only 122 miles.

Another view of the trees.

Tweety and Frosty are on the Ferry going to Long Island out of New London, CT.

Some of the views from the ferry. This looks like it could be a fort.

Lighthouse in the background.

Fishing boat coming in with a load of fish.

Another lighthouse

A Jet Express type boat coming from Long Island.

We are about to unload from the Ferry. Tweety was the last vehicle on the ferry. We got to go an hour earlier than planned.

Today we are camping at Wildwood State Park. It is located right on the Long Island Sound
Tweety's spot for three nights, notice the proximity to bath house.

They let us drive this around the campground.  Just kidding Ron.

The beach was very pretty.

The rocks at the beach were smooth and round.

The maple leaves showing their color.

Remember that the blog posts the most resent items first and it only shows a few days of posts. You have to click on "older post" at the bottom of the page to read the ones before this page. We have a number of pages on just this trip.

We traveled to Plymouth. We did  see an early settler that just came off of the ship.

The Mayflower has been docked here for 55 years.

This Gothic structure covers Plymouth rock

This is the actual rock, it is old.

The town has many wonderful buildings.

We liked the boat on the cupola on a building

A statue commemorating the people that settled this area. There is an old man in there that was not there at the time.

This statue was commemorating the mother of the pilgrims.

The reason they settled here was because of a fresh water source. Later they ran mills and machinery with this water power.

Swans on the water source.

I think this boat docked a little close to the cars.

A view out in the harbor.

Two pilgrims off of the Mayflower.

The rear windows open on the May Flower.

The Mayflower was not that big to cross the Atlantic.

Another view of the harbor.

One of the many mansions on the waterfront.

We drove down to Scusset Park, next year we may want to camp here. There is a 7 mile bike trail along the cut between Cape Cod and the main land.

The current is swift and the sailboats in the next few pics were probably going 10 knots.

It was a good day, tomorrow we cross the Long Island Sound on a ferry.

Salisbury to Wompatuck State Park.

We traveled to Wompatuck State Park at the base of Cape Cod. This was a military base at one time and now is a state park.

Tweety is very happy to be in the woods and the shade. It was 84 degrees today.

The park is known for it bikeways. The military put roads all over and now they are bike trails.

The ones that we traveled were all paved, but the beech trees were dropping their leaves.
Another pic of old man on bike.

The park is a nice contrast to what we have been seeing for the last couple of days. We rode our bikes for about 8 miles. We would have gone farther, but Becky's tire went flat so we had to walk our bikes back to the camper.
